Dance It! is a week-long dance intensive program which takes place in Sofia, Bulgaria and involves renowned choreographers from the USA and Bulgaria who teach in five different styles. The program is an international collaboration which targets young dancers – professionals and advanced amateurs, from Bulgaria and from any other interested country.
The “traditional” Dance It! program takes place annually since 2008, always during the Bulgarian academic spring break in April.
After in April 2012 the participants’ number reached the record-breaking 148 dancers, for the first time ever there will be a second, autumn edition of the project within one and the same year. It will take place in September 10th – 16th, 2012.
This is how the Iliev Dance Art Foundation would like to respond to what participants in last programs always have asked for, namely – that the project happens more frequently. Furthermore, the autumn Dance It! workshops will help all dancers to get in good shape after a long summer break, preparing for the new season/ for the coming academic year.
In the course of the week, young dancers take classes in five different styles: Classical Ballet (Balanchine style), Contemporary Dance, Broadway Jazz, Hip-Hop, Character Dance. The classes are taught by renowned teachers and choreographers from both continents who bring unique expertise to dancers who do not have the chance to experience it in their routine dance curricula. Each dancer also participates in a choreography set up during the course of the program.
The goal of the project is to give the participants the opportunity to acquire new knowledge in several fundamentally different dance forms, while also allowing them to take part in the creative process and experience international exchange and intercultural communication.
Besides the dance workshops, the project week includes also: open classes for any interested visitor; a dance performance / flash mob in the city; an interactive meeting and discussion with all scholarship recipients of the Iliev Dance Art Foundation who just came back from summer dance intensive courses in famous schools in the USA (Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle; Ballet Chicago; Syracuse University; Debbie Reynolds Dance Studios in North Hollywood); daily non-dance related, accompanying activities to ensure that especially the international participants fully enjoy their time in Bulgaria’s capital.
This project is being implemented with financial support from the America for Bulgaria Foundation.
America for Bulgaria Foundation (ABF) is partnering with the Iliev Dance Art Foundation in the Dance It! 2012 Project. Founded in 2008, ABF is the successor of the Bulgarian-American Enterprise Fund (BAEF), an investment fund created by the United States of America, acting through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). One of the goals of the Foundation is to support private-sector art entrepreneurs and organizations. ABF’s mission in arts and culture is to promote greater appreciation of and demand for Bulgarian arts and culture in-country and abroad; to nurture Bulgarian creative talents to lead and compete in the global marketplace; and to enhance Bulgaria’s international cultural profile. With the Dance It! 2012 Project, America for Bulgaria and the Iliev Dance Art Foundation aim at building another cultural bridge between Bulgaria and the United States, as well as to provide opportunities for Bulgarian students in dance to get a feel for the American way of work and to get to know some of the most prominent choreographers and masters of American ballet.
